MODELLING ACCORDING TO BUILDING INFORMATION

Although not a new concept, building information modelling isattracting increased attention from industry in the creation of new buildings and spaces.

So what is involved?  A model is created of a building which includes its characteristics, how it is to perform, how it is going to be built and what its interior is going to be like.

In other words, the model in its creation has input from the various professionals that have a hand in its construction.

The initial 3D model of an asset has been around for some time, but with computers becoming ever more sophisticated other information about components or aspects of its appearance can be included in the model.  These do include materials.

However for such an undertaking to be successful, the various parties need to pull together and make sure that no unauthorised information is added to the computer image. With teamwork it can be agreed beforehand which information should be included and what not. This kind of co-operation will avoid mistakes later on.

Different parties may use different types of software and it should be agreed beforehand which package is going to be used across the board or if they are going to use different software it should be agreed upon too.
Of course, the customer who commissions to have a building constructed will have nothing to do with this complicated design matter.  However, they will still be involved by having their wishes included at this design stage.

If the building modelling works well it is a great tool for cost analysis and trying to pin down the exact cost of a project as the cost of materials are clearly shown.  The drawings will also be much easier to understand as there will not be stacks of different images to deal with.

At the end of the day it is really important that everyone works together tightly, as if things are changed in the plan without the knowledge of the other professionals, who will be responsible for the cost of rectifying the matter?
